How I choose

What makes a venture worth starting

Four questions I ask before committing time or money to anything.

Is there a customer?

Not an audience, not a trend — a named person with a problem and a budget.

Can I test it cheaply?

If the only way to find out is to spend everything, the idea is not ready.

Does it create opportunity?

The best ventures generate work and skills for people beyond the founder.

Will it run without me?

A business that requires my presence forever is a job with extra risk.

What will you build with your talent?

Your talent is more than something you're good at. It could be the beginning of a business, a career, a movement — or your greatest contribution to the world.
