Leadership

Leadership with purpose

Leadership is not a position you are given. It is a responsibility you accept for what happens to the people who follow you.

A team working together

My leadership philosophy

Build people before you build organisations

Strategy is a bet on what your people can execute. Structure is a way of arranging them. Neither works if the people themselves are not growing — which is why development is not something leaders do after the real work. It is the real work.

The measure I keep coming back to is simple: what will the people around me be capable of in two years that they cannot do today? If I have no answer, I am managing a team rather than leading one.

Principles

Five things I lead by

Not a values poster. These are the decisions that get made when the choice is genuinely difficult.

Vision

See beyond the present. Describe the future clearly enough that people can walk towards it.

Courage

Make difficult decisions. Popularity and leadership occasionally point in different directions.

People

Build people before organisations. Capability is the only asset that compounds by itself.

Integrity

Do the right thing even when nobody is watching. Especially then.

Execution

Ideas only matter when implemented. Everything else is a conversation.

In practice

Leading people, building teams, creating opportunity

Three areas where leadership stops being abstract.

Leading people

People do not follow strategies; they follow someone they believe in. That belief is built through consistency, specific feedback and being the same person in a hard meeting as in an easy one.

Building teams

A good team is not a collection of strong individuals. It is a group with clear standards, honest communication and enough psychological safety to say the uncomfortable thing early, while it is still cheap.

Creating opportunities

The most useful thing a leader controls is access — who gets the stretch assignment, who is in the room, whose name is mentioned when they aren't there. Spend it deliberately.

Leadership & Africa

The continent does not have a talent shortage

It has a development gap. Africa is the youngest region on earth, full of people with ability, ambition and very little access to the mentorship, capital and networks that turn ability into enterprise.

That is a leadership problem before it is an economic one. Every leader here has a choice about whether their organisation is a place where young people are used or a place where they are built. Multiply that choice across enough organisations and it stops being a personal philosophy and becomes an economy.

I would rather be part of the generation that opened doors than the one that guarded them.

Lessons from experience

The bottleneck is usually you

Being the most capable person in the room feels like leadership and functions like a constraint.

Culture is what you tolerate

Not what is written on the wall — the worst behaviour you accept from your best performer.

Clarity is kindness

Vague feedback protects the giver, not the receiver. Be precise, then move on.

Trust arrives slowly, leaves instantly

It is built through small consistencies and lost in a single inconsistency.

Speaking & leadership engagements

Bring this conversation to your team

Keynotes, workshops and leadership sessions for organisations, universities, conferences and business forums.

Sessions are built around the room rather than delivered from a script — a graduate audience needs something different from a management team, and both deserve something they can act on the following Monday.

Martin Muraguri speaking to an audience

What will you build with your talent?

Your talent is more than something you're good at. It could be the beginning of a business, a career, a movement — or your greatest contribution to the world.
