Selling without being pushy
A lot of talented people quietly hate selling. They associate it with pressure, persuasion tricks and the discomfort of asking someone for money. So they build good things and then whisper about them, and wonder why the market doesn't notice.
The discomfort is usually pointing at the wrong thing. What they dislike is bad selling. Good selling looks almost nothing like it.
Sell diagnosis, not product
A doctor doesn't open with a prescription. They ask questions until the problem is clear, and only then recommend. Commercial conversations work the same way. If you spend the first ten minutes understanding what someone is actually trying to fix, the recommendation becomes obvious to both of you — and it stops feeling like persuasion, because it isn't.
Most weak pitches are strong monologues delivered too early.
Be willing to say no
Nothing builds trust faster than telling a prospect that what they need is not what you sell. It costs one deal and earns a reputation. In markets built on referral — which is most markets in Kenya and most markets anywhere — reputation is the whole engine.
The corollary: a pipeline full of poorly-fitting prospects is not a healthy pipeline. It's a queue of future disappointments.
Make the next step small and clear
People rarely refuse to buy. They refuse to decide. A large, vague ask — "so, what do you think?" — invites delay. A small, specific one — "shall we do the two-week pilot with one team and review it on the 14th?" — invites a decision. Reduce the size of the yes.
You are not asking someone to take a risk on you. You are offering to remove a risk they already have.
Follow up more than feels polite
Most opportunities are lost in silence, not in rejection. The person was busy, then travelling, then it slipped. A short, useful follow-up — not "just checking in", but something they can actually use — is a service, not a nuisance. Assume goodwill and stay in touch.
Let the work do the closing
The strongest commercial position is being genuinely good at the thing, and letting a small number of clients say so publicly. Testimonials, case results, referrals — these carry weight that no pitch can manufacture. Sales effort and delivery quality are not separate activities. Excellent delivery is the most efficient sales strategy available.

Build people before you build organisations
